Here's a question worth thinking about: if your entire income relies on 1:1 consultations, what happens the week you're sick, on leave, or fully booked?
For most practitioners, the honest answer is "ummm nothing good." We were trained to be brilliant clinicians. Nobody sat us down and mapped out what a sustainable business model actually looks like. So we default to the only one we know - initial consult, follow-up, repeat - and wonder why it feels so feast, famine and flimsy..
There's a better way to think about it. Not as 1 offer, but as 5 levels that work together.
Your Practitioner Identity Is Bigger Than "Clinician"
Before we get to the model, a quick reframe.
We're taught that being a clinician - 1:1, across the desk - is the peak of the profession. It isn't. It's one expression of your skills, and there are just as many valuable ways to show up:
- as a researcher
- an educator
- an industry consultant
- a mentor
- a practitioner-support specialist
- or a clinic owner leading a team
None of these are more valuable than the others. They're an ecosystem, and the natural health profession needs all of them. So as you read the five levels below, know that you get to choose which ones you build - based on your season of life, your gifts, and what actually lights you up.
The Five Levels of a Sustainable Business Model
1. Marketing (free)
This is how people first meet you - social media, a podcast appearance, a talk at the local gym, an AI search result. The job of this level isn't to sell. It's to get someone curious enough to know, like and trust you… then to follow you and share their email address.
2. Introductory ($7-$99)
A low-cost taste of how you work. Think, an ebook, a workshop, or a webinar. Someone pays a small amount, gets real value, and starts to trust your particular way of doing things - because we all practise differently, and that's the point. New community driven practitioners also consider Substack, Patreon or a Membership for recurring monthly income.
3. Basic ($100-$300)
For most practitioners, this is the initial consultation and follow-up. It's the base level of the model, and it deserves respect: pricing an initial consult under $100 undersells the level of our qualifications, the work and does the wider profession a disservice.
4. Intermediate (courses, packages, premium memberships)
This is where you move from 1:1 to 1:many. A 3-week program, a membership, a package of sessions built around a specific outcome for a specific type of client. A transformational journey if you will. Fewer people will buy it than your basic offer - that's expected. It's still enormously valuable for the right person at the right time.
5. Advanced (retreats, VIP days, speaking)
The top of the model. Smaller numbers, bigger transformation, often in person. A retreat, a VIP shopping-and-cooking day, a keynote. This is where your deepest expertise gets to stretch.
Why This Matters More Than Ever
A business built entirely on level three - 1:1, hour for hour - is a hard model to sustain long-term unless you're genuinely built for back-to-back client work indefinitely. Most of us aren't, and there's no shame in that.
Spreading across even two or three of these levels means you're not entirely dependent on how many bodies you can physically see in a week. It also means you have something appropriate to offer at every stage of the relationship - the person who just found you via a Google search, and the client who's worked with you for three years and is ready for something bigger.
A Simple Way to Start
You don't need all five levels built by Friday. Pick ONE gap:
- No marketing offer? Start with one downloadable that solves a specific, narrow problem.
- Nothing between marketing and a full consult? A $20-$40 workshop or ebook closes that gap fast.
- Never built past 1:1? A 3:6 week group program is often the easiest first step up.
Build one level at a time, and let each one earn its place before you add the next.
Where to Go Deeper
If you want a fully worked template rather than a blank page, our free Basic but Brilliant Funnels guide walks through exactly how these levels connect via emails - grab it and start mapping your own.
And if you're ready to build the whole thing properly - pricing, positioning, systems, the lot - this is exactly the terrain we cover inside the Natupreneur Membership and Naturopathic Futures Academy. It's the business education most of us wished we'd gotten at graduation.
There is room for everyone to do this differently. Just pick your next level and build it.
Keep being you, everyone else is taken.
