In this episode of Naturopathic Futures, we sit down with nutritionist Cassandra Parrish to explore a part of weight loss that often gets overlooked: what’s happening beneath our relationship with food.
With more than 20 years of experience in nutrition, Cass has seen first-hand that knowing what to eat isn’t always the problem. People can lose weight, follow the plan and understand nutrition, yet still find themselves caught in the same cycle. Her work has evolved to bring together nutrition, counselling, coaching and parts therapy to explore the emotional and psychological patterns that can influence food, body image and sustainable change.
Together, we explore what happens when weight loss moves beyond calories, meal plans and willpower, and starts looking at our relationship with food, perfectionism, comfort, identity and the stories we carry about our bodies.
In this episode, we discuss:
• Why knowing what to eat isn’t always enough to create lasting change
• The diet cycle, perfectionism and the all-or-nothing thinking that can keep people stuck
• How food can become connected with comfort, love, celebration and emotional regulation
• Using parts therapy to understand the different internal patterns influencing food and body image
• Moving towards an approach to health and weight loss that includes nutrition alongside mental and emotional wellbeing
This conversation offers a different perspective on weight loss for practitioners and anyone who has ever wondered why having all the nutritional knowledge still doesn’t necessarily make changing our relationship with food easy.
